CHARIOT RACE 1989
Game box cover illustration for "Carthage".
"Defiant was a fantasy board game commission. When the original was returned, I cut away six inches from the right-hand side and painted a new figure of a girl over the two original characters. I like it much better now."
ELVEN WARRIOR 1983
Bookcover illustration for 'Elric at the End of Time' by Michael Moorcock. "The most ambitious picture I have ever done for a book cover. I painted the background like this and not in full colour as I intended it to be a tapestry showing the collapse of his civilisation and not a real background. In the new era of Man that is dawning, neither he nor the dragons have a place except as figures of myth and legend."
Mixing features of the West and the Orient, "Genesis" is another symbolist pictures inspired by my interest in the esoteric. You will notice for instance that it has two limbs only. The title is an integral part of the whole. One day I hope to turn this into a figurine featuring a glowing light within the egg".
The Quest 1982
Book cover illustration for "The War Hound and the World's Pain" by Michael Moorcock.
In this picture I show an army of the dead from another dimension consisting of animated corpses, some of which have progressed in demons of rank.
CONAN DEFIANT 1975
Originally produced for a Conan paperback cover "The Shadow Kingdom" by Robert E Howard, I have since reworked this piece. This a natural process for me since I don't consider any of my paintings to ever be fully finished.
HOST OF CHAOS 1984
Illustration for the game 'Middle Earth' by Games Workshop featuring the Host of Mordor from 'Lord of the Rings'
BATTLE AT THE RED ARCH 1990
"Another battle scene painted in 1990, where I decided to use a looser style, similar to that one shown in "Berserker."
This battle scene was originally produced for the computer game "Battlemaster" in 1989.
Guardian of the Gate 1984
Book cover illustration for "Temple of Terror" by Ian Livingstone
Ginger Star 1983
Illustration for the book cover of "The Ginger Star" by Leigh Brakett. This is the first volume of the series of three books featuring the adventure hero Eric John Stark.
Hounds of Skaith 1984
Illustration for the book cover of "The Hounds of Skaith" by Leigh Brakett. The second of a serie.
"What pleased me about this picture was the lighting on the main figure. This is the final problem after composition and anatomy in a picture - imagining the light source and how it falls on the subjects."
RED CITY 1984
Book cover illustration for "The Reavers of Skaith III" by Leigh Brackett. The last in a serie of three books featuring the adventures of the hero Eric John Stark.
Crystal Guardian 1989
Computer game box cover for "Bloodwych"
THE KING MUST DIE 1986
Illustration for the cover of the role-playing board game box cover 'Blood Royale', commissioned by Games Workshop.
"I owe the inspiration for this picture to the epic film of El Cid. In the final duel, the hero pins is adversary to the ground with his massive two handed sword".
Darkness Weaves 1977
Book cover illustration for 'Darkness Weaves' by Karl Edward Wagner.
In this painting, more than any others, one can plainly see the influence that the master Frank Frazetta had on me in the early part of my career (as it also did for almost all other young fantasy artists of my generation).
It was an honour to have met the late Mr Wagner who loved the painting and bought the original from me.
The Eagle Assassins 1977
Book cover illustration for "Assassins of Gor" by John Norman
"When my good friend Ray Harryhausen saw this picture, he couldn't believe the coincidence. He promptly presented me with some pre-production drawings of a film project he had worked on a long time ago. It showed eagle riders, and classical settings, just like my own. I gave him the picture for his collection."
KANE'S STAND 1978
Book cover illustration for "Nightwinds" by Karl Edward Wagner.
This was my first attempt for the 'Nightwinds' by Karl Edward Wagner book cover. It was abandoned and left unfinished as I couldn't take out of my mind the other more involved concept (Kane's Stand) shown on left.
BY THIS AXE I RULE 1976
"Book cover illustration for "King Kull" by Robert E Howard.
THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR 1996
This was commissioned by the production designer of the movie "The Saint" starring Val Kilmer.
It was to be used as a dummy book cover (shown here on left) that the young Simon Templar was reading in class, instead of paying attention to the teacher.
Although it was to be reproduced quite small, because of my interest in the subject, I decided to go all the way and paint it with oils on a 30x40" canvas. It was completed in 10 days.
THE NAZGUL 1985
Illustration for a magazine cover. The Nazgul or Ringwraiths were once-mortal men enslaved by Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
RED DRAGON CHALLENGE 1984
Illustration for the board game "Talisman" by Games Workshop. On the surface, this shows a warrior's quest to make his way up and higher to reach a certain goal within the game. Here, his way is blocked by a fierce dragon. However, if one was to look deeper, then the picture tells a more serious story!
NO PRISONERS 1990
From Tolkien's "The Lord of the Ring", this painting was produced for a computer game called "Riders of Rohan".
OF MEN AND BEAST 1976/1992
Book cover illustration for "Almuric" by Robert E Howard

THE ORCS CHARGE 1985
Editorial illustration. Orcs are disgusting, filthy creatures with vile habits to match. They delight in the pain of others, even weaker members of their own race...
Orc Hero 1988
Book cover illustration for "The Trolltooth Wars ~ A Fighting Fantasy Novel" by Steve Jackson.
This painting was inspired by the empathy we can sometimes feel for the monster, when it is attacked and brought down by over-whelming odds
Orc War Banner 1987
Book cover illustration for "Armies of Death" by Ian Livingstone
Bookcover illustration for "To Ride Pegasus", by Anne MacCaffrey.
"I wanted Pegasus high in the sky among the clouds, but always felt that a flying horse doesn't look plausible; so I contrived this fantastical mountain-top with geyser-like fountain and petrified, coral-like flowers whidh formed vertical lines complementing the horizon and clouds beyond."
Red Hell 1983
Book cover illustration. Fighting Fantasy Monsters OUT OF THE PIT: a collection of creatures and monsters from the wonderful world of fighting fantasy created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
THE BOG CREATURE 1985

THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING I 2003
Commissioned by the musician Gary Hughes for the wraparound and booklet artword for his musical version of the Arthurian legend, which came in two parts and two seperate boxes, this is the first painting.
THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING II 2003
Commissioned by the musician Gary Hughes for the wraparound and booklet artwork for his musical version of the Arthurian legend, which came in two parts and two seperate boxes, this is the second painting.
"The final battle shows the death of Arthur and his son, a son begotten by Arthur's incestuous union with his sister Morgana. As Morgana was the principal character behind Arthur's fall, I chose her image to loom over the battle's carnage, surrounded by the mystic runes to suggest her dark powers."
THE SENTINEL 1979
Bookcover illustration for "Dragonquest", by Anne MacCaffrey.
"This creature is a compromise between my own idea of a dragon and the one in the book, this led me to give it six limbs instead of the four which I have always felt would make a more feasible dragon".
TRIAL BY COMBAT 1980
Bookcover illustration for "The Grail War" by R. Monaco. Also used for a game box cover "Warrior Knights" by Games Workshop.
"Book cover illustration. One of Chris's best loved fantasy paintings from the eighties"
The Bull and the Spear 1975 / 1993
Illustration for the book cover of "The Bull and The Spear" by Michael Moorcock, featuring the hero Corum.
"I have long admired the Fantasy writing of Michael Moorcock and commissions for Moorcock covers have always been a delight to paint as he is such a visual writer."
ENTER THE HERO 1989
Book cover illustration
Wrap round book cover art. I'm a big fun of the American pulp fantasy writer Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan. I intended this to be just like an opening to one of his amazing short stories, thus the tittle "Enter the Hero"
THE SWORD AND THE SERPENT 1985
Bookcover illustration for "The Belgariad", by David Edding.
"In this instance I chose a graphic approach rather than the usual all-action, using a serpent as a symbol of evil in the traditional fashion, although personally I think they are nothing of the sort."
THE SLAIN SERPENT 1985
Book cover illustration "The Belgariad" by David Eddings

Role playing game box cover illustration.
BANNER (MICHAEL MOORCOCK)
BANNER (ROBERT E HOWARD)
THE WORLD OF ODYSSEUS 1966
This was done at home after reading The Odyssey by Homer, in the style of the frieze. It was my first use of oil colours, later to be abandoned when I started my professional work.
1966 was my first year at Hornsey College of Art.
Original size: 51"x17"
Oils on hardboard/masonite.
THE AGE OF CONAN 1969
This was the follow up painting from 'The World of Odysseus', but on the same frieze design. By this time, I have discovered the amazing writing of Robert E Howard so my interests have shifted away from the classics to the fantasy.
1969 is when I left college and started my career as an Illustrator.
Size: 62"x 20"
Oils on hardboard/masonite.
